The William H. Chapman Foundation was chartered in 1951 for the purpose of providing financial assistance to scholars of New London County, CT for post-secondary education in both academics and the trades. Initial funding was provided from the sale of the former William H. Chapman Technical High School, now Bennie Dover Middle School.
The Foundation presently provides awards ranging from $500 to $2500 to an average of 150 students per year. Recipients are chosen on the basis of application (including financial and academic forms), academic performance, financial need (income cut-off level last year was family income of $110,000), extracurricular activities, community involvement and interview. Extenuating circumstances are considered. There are no age, sex, race, religious, college or field of study restrictions. The Chapman Foundation also makes awards to students desiring to attend vocational and certificate programs.
